Le Pen defeated – Macron wins for Europe
The victory of Macron against Le Pen in the French presidential election is a victory for all Europeans – and a defeat for the politics she represents, the politics of Brexit, Trump and Putin.
Make no mistake, Brexit is part of a global authoritarian project – and this is a setback for them.
As Macron himself said in the run up to polling day, the election was "a referendum for or against Europe, and we are for!"
The cost of living crisis is the cost of Brexit crisis
The government yesterday claimed to be working on ways to fix the cost of living crisis – but they continue to ignore the elephant in the room. Yes, it's Brexit.
While there are issues in many countries with gas supply, for example, the UK stands alone in seeing signs of drastic inflation. A new report proves that Brexit has had a "clear and robust impact" on rising food prices.
The report says that trade barriers introduced after leaving the EU led to a 6% increase in UK food prices.
And that's before the UK has even started most of the border checks EU imports that it is supposed to introduce in July – a plan that now looks set to be delayed for a fourth time, amid warnings of further price rises and shortages.
Sometimes people who are pessimistic about the prospects of rejoining the EU tell us "Brexit has happened, you can't reverse it". But if Brexit is "done", why are many of its most thorny aspects eternally delayed? And why is the government threatening to throw out the Northern Ireland deal – again?
Brexit is a collection of dozens of incredibly detailed, difficult and counter-productive things to implement, and all are subject to delay, confusion and outright UK rule-breaking. It is inherently unstable.
That's why Brexit will never be "finished" – until we get rid of it.
