The prime minister yesterday told the country what we have been saying for years:
"As the world continues down this volatile path, our long-term national interest requires closer partnership with our allies in Europe and with the European Union."
Keir Starmer announced an "ambitious" summer summit with the EU. But here's the problem: We've heard pledges of ambitious deals before. We've seen summits before. Warm words are no longer enough.
The war in Iran is going to become a new cost of living crisis – with Brexit Britain particularly badly affected. Brexit multiplies economic shocks, and the years since Brexit began have seen shock after shock come down the pipe.
With Trump's US breaking its alliances and insulting us daily, the UK urgently needs to pivot hard back towards Europe. The EU is our only option, both to reverse the economic damage and to rebuild alliances in a hostile world.
We must go beyond tweaks and mini-deals to finally begin the process of rejoining the EU. Let's push for the summit to be the beginning of this process.
