Ministers returned from their holidays into a new round of UK economic instability – this time in the bond markets.

This uncertainty is raising the cost of government borrowing (today the highest since 2004) and bringing back unhappy memories of Liz Truss' short-lived premiership as the chancellor's future is questioned.

Labour is in a 'fiscal trap': cut spending, raise taxes, or borrow more? So far they are leaning towards spending cuts.

But there is another way out. It's the one that Labour came to office pledging to take: economic growth.

The big, low-hanging fruit of getting the British economy growing again is to rejoin the EU. (In the short term, that doing every bit of alignment that can be done quickly and declaring the intent to apply to rejoin.)

This would unlock the investment that the economy desperately needs, be a lifeline to small businesses, get imports and exports working properly again, and so much more. Forget the 'red lines' and prioritise the economy.

They say they have no choice. Let's remind them that they do.

Youth mobility debate tomorrow – write to your MP!

Good news: Parliament will debate the EU's proposals for a youth mobility scheme tomorrow (Wednesday)!

This is a 'ten-minute rule' motion led by Lib Dem MP James MacCleary, coming after prime minister's questions.

It would be great to maximise MPs' attendance at the debate to show the importance of the issue.

Day for Rejoin 2025

The next annual 'Day for Rejoin' has been set for Saturday 29 March 2025. Organised by the National Rejoin March, this is a day for local Rejoin groups across the country to organise events in their local area. Past years have included everything from street stalls to protests to a cabaret!

Events are usually organised by local groups, but could also be a great way to start one. NRM can give you a hand if you're not sure.
