Food prices are set to rise when new Brexit import rules come into force at the end of this month.
Yes, just as the government was boasting that inflation is starting to come down, they are going ahead with another self-inflicted price rise. These are the changes that they delayed five times, but are now finally due to come into force for imports from the EU into the UK.
Remember, the UK continues to import most of its fresh food – and most of those imports come from Europe.
Even small imports of foods such as cheese, yoghurt, sausage and more will face fees of up to £145 per shipment from 30 April. Given the increased costs, many importers are likely to stop bothering altogether, leading to shortages.
When you see the empty shelves and rising prices, tell everyone: this is down to Brexit.
ECHR threat
Rishi Sunak has made his clearest threat yet to leave the European Convention on Human Rights, and the court that enforces it.
In an interview he stated that he would be willing to leave the "foreign court" if it blocked the government's brutal plan to send refugees to Rwanda.
But the ECHR is not a "foreign court" – it covers every country in Europe, our continent, except for Russia and Belarus – and Britain was a key part of setting it up to begin with. (It is only since Brexit that we have had to suffer the idiocy of "European" being equated with "foreign".)
The convention protects our fundamental rights, including the right to liberty, right to a fair trial, prohibition of torture and slavery and much more. The Brexit Tories should be asked which of these rights they are planning to take from us.
As the general election gets closer, Stay European will support campaigning to keep Britain in the ECHR, especially if the Tories make the desperate last-ditch move of pledging to leave the ECHR in their manifesto.
