53% of the British public now support rejoining the European Union, according to the latest ComRes poll.

We are now the majority – and by more than the infamous 52-48 referendum, no less.

If that's not enough to celebrate, three more things stand out from the poll:

  1. The trend in support is solidly upwards. Rejoin has risen by 4 points since the last time the question was asked.
  2. Among people who did not vote in the 2016 referendum, a massive 82% now want to rejoin. (Yes, 82%, that's not a typo!)
  3. On the age breakdown, the 18-34 age group support Rejoin by an incredible 77%! This last fact is particularly powerful because it means the Rejoin vote inherently grows every day. As we point out in Routes to Rejoin, every day thousands of people have their 18th birthday and get the right to vote. And for every one Brexiter among those new voters, there are three Rejoiners.

You don't have to take our word for it – in an analysis of their poll, Chris Hopkins of ComRes sees "the momentum shifting towards a majority who would now vote to re-join the EU... all eyes will be on those who did not vote in 2016 and younger voters who may have not had the opportunity to, who are both overwhelmingly in favour of the UK becoming a member again."

The future is Rejoin.

The pro-EU movement must speak for the majority and for young people

At the moment we are in the deeply absurd position that while a majority of the public support rejoining the EU, a majority of the 'leaders' of large pro-EU organisations are too timid to publicly back Rejoin. They are not leading but trailing far behind!

A new activist, perhaps a young person inspired to campaign to rejoin the EU and looking for pro-EU groups to join, would surely find this hesitancy bizarre. We must put the pro-European house in order and build a powerful movement to encourage this wave of public support to keep growing.
