While the politicians refuse to discuss Brexit, here's the latest polling on rejoining the EU: 62% for Rejoin.
Yet while Brexit has been missing from the election campaign, the (most likely) impending Tory near-wipeout is still huge for our chances of rejoining.
Stay European's strategic argument all along has been "don't persuade the Tories – destroy the Tories". Now that goal is within reach.
Once they are off the scene, the chances of Rejoin go up massively.
Roadblock removed
Yes, other parties mostly don't have a Rejoin policy right now. But after the election, it will be clear that it was Brexit that cost the Tories everything. The few remaining Tories still won't get it, but everyone else will.
Progressive parties will no longer need to fear the Tories seizing on any move back towards the EU.
It removes the single biggest roadblock between where we are now and rejoining the EU.
The Rejoin revolt
It's a disaster for democracy that we went straight from the "Get Brexit Done" election to the "Don't Mention Brexit" election.
After the election, we're going to hit Labour hard with rejoin campaigning from day one.
We're supporting the third National Rejoin March – scheduled for September 2024, date coming soon.
We're going to work with other activists and groups to build a revolt for Rejoin inside Labour, and other parties too.
We will also have to campaign to hold Faragism at bay – but those arch-Brexiters anyway no longer defend their own Brexit project.
With the Tories most likely gone, and unlikely to come back any time soon, the Rejoin movement has a relatively simple strategy to follow from the day after the election:
Build a mass campaign for Rejoin. Organise the 60%+ who are with us. Pile the pressure on the Labour Party. Work with pro-European MPs and party members – a majority of Labour members support Rejoin. Back everything that moves us closer back towards the EU.
The end of the Brexit government is a landmark on our road to Rejoin. We will be with you for the whole journey – and we believe it might be shorter than everyone currently thinks.
